North Fork and Middle Fork American River Watersheds Sediment Reduction Projects
Planning and Due Diligence

PROJECT GOAL
The primary goal of this project is to identify and deliver ten (10)
ready-to-proceed, highpriority sediment reduction projects for native roads,
diversion ditches, and abandoned mines within the North Fork and Middle Fork
American River watersheds.
A secondary goal of this project is to fill a significant data gap with regards
to instream suspended sediment quantity and quality, and to estimate
anthropogenic and natural suspended sediment, adsorbed mercury, and dissolved
mercury loads using data collected through a SWAMP-approved stream monitoring
program. PROJECT SCOPE A combination of GPS field survey, WEPP erosion
prediction modeling, GIS analysis, and Agency collaboration will be implemented
to identify and select ten high-priority sediment reduction projects to advance
for CEQA and NEPA completion.
A three month, field-level GPS survey of native roads, diversion ditches, and
abandoned mines that are hydrologically connected to perennial and ephemeral
channels will be conducted to collect attribute data needed for the WEPP model.
The WEPP model will then be applied using all GPS data collected to predict
annual average sediment yield rates. Results will be used to identify and select
ten high-priority sediment reduction projects, for which CEQA and NEPA will be
completed.
A stream monitoring program following a SWRCB-approved QAPP will be implemented
to measure flow and collect discrete surface water samples to be analyzed for
TSS, total mercury, and dissolved mercury. Monitoring will be conducted on a
monthly basis at 16 sampling locations within the North Fork and Middle Fork
American River watersheds using a top-down approach, and results will be used to
calculate anthropogenic and natural suspended sediment, adsorbed mercury, and
dissolved mercury loads.
