Foresthill Warden selected as DFG Officer of the Year

The California Department of Fish and Game has selected Foresthill Warden Robert Pelzman as its Law Enforcement Division's Officer of the Year.

Well known local fly fishing guide, Bill Carnazzo (Upper American River Vice President and Granite Bay Flycasters Board Member) also noted meeting Warden Pelzman just after he had nabbed poachers with a huge number of small trout illegally taken from Long Canyon Creek, a tributary to the Rubicon River in the Middle Fork American River Watershed.

This is just another example of the fine work that the DFG Game Wardens do to protect the fisheries of the Upper American River Watershed! These guys don’t get enough recognition for the great work that they do, so we want to send our Congratulations to Warden Pelzman for work WELL DONE!  (See article on DFG Site)

First Middle Fork American River Hardhead Collection "Fish Out" 4/23/2010

Researchers at U.C. Davis received a grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to expand on the limited knowledge of temperature preferences of the California native Hardhead in local Sierra Nevada rivers. The main purpose of this “fish out” was to start helping to collect native Hardhead (Photo 1) known to occupy the Middle Fork of the American River at Ralston Afterbay (a.k.a. Oxbow) Reservoir on the M.F. American River south east of Foresthill, CA.   (click for full story)

Governor Signs Instream Gold Mining Moratorium Bill

Yesterday Governor Schwarzenegger signed a bill to temporarily ban the destructive form of recreational gold mining known as suction dredging. The bill places an immediate moratorium on all suction dredge mining until the California Department of Fish and Game develops and implements new suction dredge regulations that are protective of fisheries and water quality.

Introduced by Senator Pat Wiggins (D-Santa Rosa), the bill attracted broad bi-partisan support and passed both houses of the legislature with a 2/3 majority.

The signing marked a major victory by a diverse coalition of Tribes, fishermen, and conservation groups from around the state.  CalTrout has spearheaded this effort -- with your help.  TroutClouters sent over 500 emails to Governor Schwarzenegger urging his signature.

California's rivers and streams are suffering from increasing degradation, and the endangered and threatened fish species face ever more obstacles to survival.  Suction dredging disturbs spawning beds of trout, steelhead and salmon.  Healthy spawning beds are essential to the long-term survival of these species.

We hope that at the end of the rule making process, the size of dredges will be limited and critical habitats and spawning areas for threatened species will be off limits while allowing dredgers access to areas less vital for the survival of at-risk species.

Thank you for making this happen.

UARF Director William Templin quoted in Sac Bee on UARF position on Federal Delta Biological Opinion.

"William Templin, of the Upper American River Foundation, said there is still good habitat to welcome back migrating fish. A recent genetic study, Templin said, showed some rainbow trout on the upper American River are actually remnants of steelhead that once migrated from the ocean.
"For me, it'll feel like something long overdue," he said."
